WOMEN'S PORTRAITURE
Being in front of a camera, being at the centre, creates an immediate presence - an acute awareness of your body, your thoughts and your emotional state. This can be unnerving but given a little time and patience, it can also be empowering. Being photographed invites us to reveal aspects of ourselves that we might not have the freedom or space to express in our everyday lives, and it has the potential to make us feel good in our beautifully flawed skin.
Having modelled as a younger woman, I felt both the crippling insecurity and sense of empowerment one can experience being in front of a camera. Unfortunately, the insecurities outweighed the good stuff, constrained as I was by expectations to look a certain way, to embody a very narrow idea of femininity that too often felt like a choke hold. Being on the other side of the lens, I don't work by any stereotypes of what womanhood should look like. You don’t have to smile if you don’t feel like it and I will never ask you to stand in forced, uncomfortable poses. I know being seen so intimately by a stranger can be intimidating, but as we get to know each other, your natural process of expression will have space to unfold, creating not only beautiful portraits but an experience of being in charge of your own image. We are partners throughout this process, guided by my eye and carried out on your terms.
